Capers grow wild here in the Aeolian Islands. I did not realize that the many purple flowered plants I was seeing growing out of rocks, cliffs and among wild flowers was the caper plant until I did a little research. Here in Lipari, you can buy them everywhere. They come in various sizes and the most common are salted in bags. They are processed and grown right here on the island.
They add them to salads, fish and meat dishes, and I have even now added them to scrambled eggs. A little addictive.
